Tips For Starting a New Painting

EPISODE 79

This week I am chatting about how I get started with a painting. It’s a fitting topic as I’ve just started a commission piece. The first commission in a long time.

My commission process in the early days was… well, let’s just say that it was less than ideal! So, needless to say, I was feeling a bit nervous about diving back into custom work. But then I remembered all that I had learned. All the mistakes, sleepless nights, revelations, conversations. Every part of the journey that has brought me to where I am now.

I am not the same artist that I was years ago and neither are you! We are always evolving. So with new confidence, today I am sharing the steps I now take when I start a new painting or body of work.

Richie and I also talk about gathering inspiration from a variety of sources. Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to mention how much I enjoyed the Taylor Swift, Miss Americana documentary!

Here’s a quick summary of what you’ll hear about in this episode:

  • Making studies and working on multiple pieces.

  • Setting intentions for your theme, colour and composition.

  • Using references and doing your research.

  • Chunking the process down into small manageable parts.

  • Trusting your instincts and continuing to experiment.
