EPISODE 188
Marketing is a tricky part of running a creative business. It can feel pushy, icky or simply like a chore — but at other times, it can be surprisingly interesting and even fun.
Over the years, we’ve dialled our marketing up and down, tried different things, and learned through plenty of trial and error.
This week, as we head into a more marketing-focused period, we’re chatting about our experiences and what we’ve learned along the way. Ultimately, it’s a conversation about putting yourself out there and sharing what you create.
Here is a summary of what we discussed:
Finding a Sustainable Approach to Marketing
I talk about my mixed feelings around marketing and how I’ve learned to find a level that supports the business without taking over my life.Attracting the Right Audience
We discuss the difference between building an audience that enjoys your content and reaching people who are genuinely interested in what you offer. The Cost of Constant Selling
There was a time when I followed all the usual marketing advice, but it left me depleted and with less time for art. I’ve had to become more comfortable with leaving some money on the table.Moving Between Business and Creative Modes
I work best in phases, focusing heavily on launches and marketing when needed, then shifting back into a more creative season afterwards.Remembering the Value of Older Work
We talk about revisiting past courses, paintings and content. Something may feel old to you while still being completely new and valuable to someone else.Marketing as Sharing
Ultimately, I try to see marketing as a way of helping my art and ideas reach people, rather than something that has to feel pushy or overly sales-focused.
