EPISODE 189

What is flow state, why is it so beneficial for artists, and what can we do to create more opportunities for it to show up in our creative practice?

Today, Richie draws on his background in performance coaching to help us better understand what’s required to enter a flow state and how it differs from hyperfocus.

Whether you’re creating a painting, writing a blog post, filming a video, or immersed in another creative pursuit, we hope this conversation gives you a few ideas for approaching your work with flow in mind.

Here is a summary of what we discussed:

  • What Flow State Actually Feels Like
We talk about those moments when creativity feels effortless, time disappears and you come away feeling energised, joyful and connected to what you’ve made.

  • Creating the Right Conditions for Flow
Simple preparation can make a big difference — clearing your space, gathering supplies, putting on music, having a drink nearby and removing unnecessary distractions before you begin.

  • Why Skill and Familiarity Matter
Flow is more likely when you’ve developed some confidence and experience. When you’re new to something, more of your attention naturally goes towards thinking through each step.

  • Finding the Right Level of Challenge
A task that is too easy can become boring, while something too difficult can create frustration. We talk about finding that sweet spot where there is enough challenge to keep you engaged.

  • Flow State vs. Hyperfocus
While flow tends to leave you feeling energised, hyperfocus can become unhealthy and consuming. We share examples of getting so fixated on a task that we ignored food, rest and other priorities — and came away feeling exhausted or regretful.

  • You Don’t Need Perfect Conditions
Flow can come and go, and small interruptions don’t necessarily ruin it. The aim isn’t to force flow, but to create supportive conditions, stay curious and appreciate the full range of experiences that come with making art.
