EPISODE 192
Staring at a blank sketchbook page and not sure where to begin? In this episode, I’m sharing five of my favourite ways to get started on a sketchbook page.
If you love mixed media, you’re going to love this one! We’re talking collage, monoprinting, watercolour, ink, drawing and all sorts of creative possibilities.
And as I chat through these simple starting points, I think you’ll hear just how excited I get about the possibilities! My hope is that some of that enthusiasm rubs off on you, sparks a few ideas of your own, and makes you want to run straight to your creative space and start getting something down on the page.

Here is a summary of what we discussed:
Starting with Collage
Using painted papers, book pages and found materials to explore colour, texture and composition. Collage is a wonderfully forgiving way to experiment before committing to a design.Creating a Coloured Background
Covering a blank page with a solid colour can open up exciting possibilities. We talk about using dark or unexpected colours as a base for contrasting marks, drawings and layers.
Doodling, Drawing and Pattern Making
Starting with simple lines, botanical sketches or repeating patterns, then layering paint over the top. A lovely way to practise drawing while keeping things loose and playful.
Playing with Watercolour and Ink
Exploring drips, splatters and flowing pigment to create unpredictable textures. Learning to embrace these unexpected results can help loosen up your approach and overcome perfectionism.
Experimenting with Monoprinting
Using paint, paper and everyday objects to transfer interesting marks and textures onto your sketchbook pages. A simple technique with endless creative possibilities.
Building Creative Momentum Through Mixed Media
Combining techniques, experimenting with different layers and following your curiosity. We reflect on how a simple starting point can quickly lead to new ideas and renewed enthusiasm for making art.
