EPISODE 187

In this episode, Richie shares a simple mindset tool for checking in on how we’re doing. Are we flat chat and edging towards burnout? Or have we eased off so much that we’re starting to disconnect and stagnate? It’s a helpful way to find that sustainable sweet spot and keep the spark alive over the long term.

We get there through a slightly meandering conversation that spans course launches, fitness regimes, family time and creative pursuits — so you’re going to have to trust us with this one!

Here is a summary of what we discussed:

  • When Something Shifts From a Habit to a Genuine Interest
I talk about how going to the gym gradually changed from something I felt I should do into something I became genuinely curious and excited about — and how I’ve experienced that same shift with art.

  • The Power of Starting Gently
We talk about building confidence through small, manageable steps rather than trying to know or do everything at once — whether that’s learning a few gym exercises, picking up a handful of art supplies or slowly increasing how often you practise.

  • Staying Connected Even When You’re Not Actively Doing the Thing
Friends, community, podcasts, books, videos and other forms of inspiration can keep that spark alive during quieter periods. Sometimes simply staying connected to something you love makes it much easier to return when the time is right.

  • Why Obsession and Burnout Can Be Surprisingly Close
Richie introduces the idea that obsession and complete disengagement may be closer together than we think. Going all-in can easily lead to burnout and an eventual swing back to doing nothing at all.

  • Sustainable Habits Over Short Bursts of Intensity
We reflect on 30-day and 100-day challenges and how motivating they can be, but also how easily they can create an ‘off switch’ when they end. A slower, layered approach can often be much easier to sustain over the long term.

  • Finding Your Own Sustainable Sweet Spot
We finish by inviting you to consider where your own dial is sitting right now. Are you edging towards burnout, feeling a little disconnected, or somewhere in that healthy middle? The sweet spot will be different for everyone — and it will naturally move as life changes.
