Getting a Studio Space Outside the Home

Getting a Studio Space Outside the Home - The Laura Horn Art Podcast

EPISODE 90

Is it better to have a studio at home or a studio offsite? A question that comes up again and again in the art community.

I’ve always been in the home studio camp but that all changed 3 months ago! With the business growing and it becoming harder and harder to maintain boundaries between work and home, Richie and I took the plunge and leased a creative space together.

Join us as we chat about how it happened, what we were looking for in a studio space, and the pros and cons based on our experience so far.

While it is pretty obvious that we are both ecstatic about this new development, we do want to say that for every artist it is different. What works for us might not work for you. The most important thing is that YOU are happy in the place that YOU create. That is truly all that matters!

A few things you will hear about in this episode:

  • Deciding on your non-negotiablesβ€”e.g. size, light, noise, location, internet speed, etc.

  • Choosing a layout that suits your creative priorities.

  • Making the space cosy and a place you want to be in.

  • The advantages of an offsite studio - e.g. separation between home and work, increased efficiency; and more opportunities for collaboration and social connection.

  • The disadvantages of an offsite studio, e.g. extra expenses, art supplies being split between home and the studio, and not being able to do little home jobs like hanging out loads of washing!
