When Is Something Good Enough?

EPISODE 185

This week, we talk about the question: when is something good enough? This came about because I’ve been struggling to make some decisions around my signature course, Modern Mixed Media.

We talk about the urge to keep improving and levelling up, and how this can sometimes be counter-productive. Sometimes, what we really need is to give ourselves permission to let something be what it was and be okay with moving on to what comes next.

This can also apply to older bodies of artwork and other creative projects. We hope it gives you some food for thought around when to keep working on something — and when to let it be.

Here is a summary of what we discussed:

  • When Is Something Good Enough?
I share the behind-the-scenes challenges I’ve been having while trying to update my signature course, Modern Mixed Media, and questioning whether those changes are actually needed.

  • Bigger Isn’t Always Better
We talk about the temptation to keep adding more lessons, techniques and content, and why sometimes simplicity can create a better and more accessible learning experience.

  • Honouring What You’ve Already Created
Our conversation broadens into how we look back at older courses, paintings and bodies of work, and the importance of recognising that something can still be beautiful and valuable even if we’ve since grown or changed.

  • Knowing When to Let Something Go
We also acknowledge that sometimes work genuinely has reached the end of its life and that this is okay too.

  • The Power of Keeping Things Simple
We reflect on how becoming more experienced can sometimes make us overcomplicate things, particularly when teaching, and why returning to the basics can often be incredibly valuable.

  • Letting Go of the Need to Impress
We talk about the pressure to continually prove ourselves, make our work more sophisticated or demonstrate how much we know, and how this can take some of the joy out of creativity.

  • Making Space for Organic Creativity
We finish by talking about overthinking, structure and the desire to know where everything is going. Sometimes the best thing we can do is create first, let things unfold naturally and work out where they belong later.
