Want a quick summary of the tips? Here they are…

1. Feel Your Feelings
Often when we are making art, we get caught up in the work being accurate, e.g. a face needs to look like a face or a tree needs to look like a tree! Abstract art isn’t about realistic representation. It’s about how it makes you and the viewer feel.

TIP: While making art, let your feelings come to the surface and play a part in how you paint. Choose colours and marks based on your emotions and mood.

2. Let Go of Control
Give yourself the freedom to play. Let go of the idea of “perfection” and deliberately use techniques that bring an unpredictable quality to your work.

TIP: Try painting with your non-dominant hand, shutting your eyes, finger painting, using fluid paint, or unconventional painting tools.

3. Keep it Simple
So often we over-complicate things, both in art and in life. In abstract art, simplification is a valuable tool. Less is often more.

TIP: Try using a limited palette, honing in on one shape or using more negative space in your work.

4. Delight in Your Materials
Focus on the process of painting rather than the outcome. See what your materials can do and notice what you enjoy. Mix things up and try different supplies.

TIP: Grab a selection of art supplies and create a piece without worrying about the end result. Use it as an opportunity to explore your materials and learn more about what you love and don’t love.

5. Do Something Unexpected
Think outside the box. Go against the grain! Abstract art provides you with the ultimate playground. You don’t need to play by the rules.

TIP: Use unrealistic colours, experiment with the scale of your elements, mix realism with abstraction, be bold with colour, try unusual supplies, and so on. Do things that will push the boundaries of your work!
